Interruptions and isolation tied to COVID-19 have likely made an already deadly pandemic even deadlier.  

The New York Times recently calculated that there were approximately 574,000 excess deaths in the United States during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, from mid-March of 2020 to late February of this year.
